Breast Pump Modes Explained: Massage, Stimulation & Expression Mode — Which One Should You Use?
Have you ever looked at your breast pump and wondered what the different modes are for? 🤔
Massage Mode. Stimulation Mode. Expression Mode.
Different breast pumps may use different names, but these modes are generally designed to support different parts of the pumping process.
In this video, Dee from Brother Bear explains why breast pumps come with different modes, how they work and what mums should know before choosing their settings.

Why Do Breast Pumps Have Different Modes?
When a baby breastfeeds, their sucking pattern can change throughout a feed. A breast pump uses different suction rhythms to help encourage milk flow and express milk.
Many electric breast pumps offer two main modes:
Massage / Stimulation Mode: A faster, lighter rhythm that helps encourage the milk let-down reflex.
Expression Mode: A slower, more sustained rhythm designed to help draw milk out once milk flow has started.
Some pumps also offer additional modes or adjustable cycle speeds. The names and functions can vary by brand and model, so always refer to your pump's user manual.
1. Expression Mode: What Does It Do?
Expression Mode is generally used to express milk after milk flow has started.
Compared with stimulation mode, expression mode commonly uses a slower sucking rhythm. The pump creates a repeated pattern of suction and release to help draw milk into the collection bottle.
Think of it this way:
👶 Stimulation Mode: Helps encourage milk to let down.
🍼 Expression Mode: Helps express milk once milk flow begins.
Some pumps allow you to adjust the cycle speed and suction strength separately. Others use preset patterns.
Does faster mean more milk?
Not necessarily. A faster cycle or stronger suction setting does not automatically mean you'll express more milk. Comfort, correct flange fit and your body's response to the pump all matter.
Choose a setting that feels comfortable and allows milk to flow. Pumping should not be painful.
2. Massage Mode / Stimulation Mode: Why Start Here?
Massage Mode is also commonly called Stimulation Mode.
This mode usually uses a faster, lighter suction rhythm to encourage the milk let-down reflex. It is often used at the beginning of a pumping session.
Some pumps start in stimulation mode automatically, while others allow you to choose the mode yourself.
You may notice milk beginning to flow during this phase. If it does, you can follow your pump's instructions to switch to expression mode.
3. When Should You Switch from Stimulation to Expression Mode?
There is no single switching time that works for every mum or every breast pump.
Some pumps automatically switch after a set time. With other pumps, you can switch manually.
A practical approach is:
Start with the pump's stimulation or massage mode, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Keep the suction comfortable.
Watch for milk flow or signs that your let-down has started.
Switch to expression mode according to your pump's instructions.
Adjust the settings to a comfortable level that works for you.
If milk flow slows down later in the session, some pumps allow you to return to stimulation mode to encourage another let-down. Follow your pump's instructions and your own comfort.
4. Does Higher Suction Mean More Breast Milk?
This is one of the most common questions mums ask.
The answer is: not always.
Using the highest suction setting may feel uncomfortable or painful, and stronger suction does not guarantee more milk.
Instead, start gently and increase the suction only to a comfortable level. If pumping hurts, stop and check your flange size, positioning and pump settings.
The right setting is individual. What works for one mum may not work for another.
5. Every Breast Pump May Work Differently
Although many breast pumps use stimulation and expression modes, the exact pattern can vary.
For example, one pump may automatically switch modes after a short period, while another allows mums to switch manually or customise the rhythm.
That is why it is important to understand your own pump rather than assume every brand uses the same settings.
